Después del fracaso de Skynet, gracias a la intervención de un humano enviado por la resistencia para salvar a Sarah Connor -el soldado y fiel seguidor de John Connor, Kyle Reese- las máquinas no se rindieron, y esta vez envían a otro cyborg con una nueva misión; si la vez anterior no consiguieron acabar con Sarah, esta vez el objetivo es el propio John Connor, aún siendo un niño.
La resistencia captura a un T-800 CSM-101, y John Connor lo reprograma y lo envía al presente para proteger y obedecer en todo a su joven "yo" del pasado.
Las máquinas envían al avanzado T-1000 (Robert Patrick), un prototipo de aleación mimética o metal líquido, capaz de copiar formas del mismo tamaño y de esa forma poder asesinar mucho más sutilmente a John Connor.
Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) se encuentra encerrada en el hospital psiquiátrico de Pescadero, en el área de máxima seguridad, reiterando la historia del fin de los tiempos y de las máquinas al Dr. Silberman (Earl Boen).
