Fue una banda de Indie rock formada en Mánchester, Reino Unido en 1982. Fue formada por Morrissey (vocalista) y Johnny Marr (guitarra), a quienes se unieron posteriormente Andy Rourke (bajo) y Mike Joyce (batería). Los críticos la han llamado la banda más importante de Rock alternativo que surgió de la escena británica de música independiente en los años 1980.


La banda firmó con el sello discográfico independiente Rough Trade Records, con el cual lanzaron cuatro álbumes de estudio y varias recopilaciones, así como numerosos sencillos. A pesar de que consiguieron un notable éxito comercial fuera del Reino Unido cuando aún estaban juntos, nunca se lanzó un sencillo que tuviera un éxito trascendente en su país de origen. The Smiths siguieron ganando un éxito cada vez mayor, y se convirtieron en una de las bandas más comerciales de la década.


La banda se separó en 1987 en medio de desacuerdos entre Morrissey y Marr y desde entonces han rechazado varias ofertas para reunirse de nuevo.
