Polikarpov I-16
uizas influenciado por los aviones de carreras norteamericanos, el TsKB-12 o I-16, fué un caza de escasa longuitud y pequeño (puede que por ese aspecto tan poco comercial fuera ignorado en Occidente). Nadie fuera de la Union Sovietica se intereso en este extraño caza , con un fuselaje monocasco cantiliever, con tren de aterrizaje retractil y helice de paso variable que en su 1ª version de produccion masiva en serie era de 90 a 120 km/h mas rapido que los cazas contemporaneos de otros paises. Irrumpieron en el panorama internacional cuando unos 250 fueron embarcados con destino a la Republica Española, donde su fiabilidad, ametralladoras de 1800 proyectiles por minuto, maniobrabilidad y rapida trepada asi como un picado sorprendente ,apabullaron a sus contrincantes, que lo apodaron ''Rata'' (''Mosca'' para los republicanos). Unos cuantos Tipo 10 permanecieron en servicio en España hasta 1952.
centenares de varios modelos combatieron contra los japoneses en Manchuria y China, donde muchos de ellos fueron dotados con nuevos cohetes RS-82.Las versiones ultimas y mas potentes fueron construidas en cantidades superiores a las anteriores, y unos 30 fueron de la version de entrenamiento UTI con asientos en tándem y cabinas abiertas (algunas versiones con tren fijo).La produccion total de este caza extremadamente importante fue de unos 7.000, de los que aproximadamente 4.000 combatieron contra los invasores alemanes en 1941/1943.Pilotados heroicamente contra aviones de diseño moderno, a menudo fueron usados en ataques suicidas (embestidas). El I-16 operó tanto con ruedas como con squies mucho tiempo despues de quedar obsoleto y aún hoy dia es considerado uno de los aviones de combate mas
