Immortal es una banda de black metal noruega fundada en 1990 por el bajista y vocalista Olve Eikemo, el batería Armagedda y los guitarristas Harald Nævdal y Jörn Tonsberg en la ciudad de Bergen (en la que también se formaron bandas como Burzum o Gorgoroth). Desde entonces, Eikemo y Nævdal se erigieron como la columna vertebral de la banda puesto que grabaron la mayoría de los álbumes de la banda. La fama (dentro del movimiento black metal noruego) les llegó con su primer álbum Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. A pesar de ser una de las bandas más influyentes dentro del black metal, la banda ha rechazado desde sus comienzos esta etiqueta para su música pues no son satánicos y sus letras están influenciadas en gran medida por la majestuosidad del invierno. En el año 2003 la banda anuncia su separación pero en el 2006 regresan Abbath, Horgh y Apollyon; la formación que aún permenece en la actualidad. Desde su debut en 1990, la banda ha lanzado siete álbumes de estudio, un EP y un recopilatorio. Algunos álbumes en vivo han sido publicados pero todos ellos son bootlegs. El actual batería, Horgh, dijo que esperan lanzar alguno en el futuro.
