Vital Slim Keto Tabata wanted to test the protocol with athletes at different levels. Tabata's original study of 1996 examined two groups of amateur athletes who were in their thirties: The first group pedaled on an ergometer for 60 minutes at a moderate intensity (70% of VO2 max.). Something similar to a long career session, or what was called slow long distance work (LSD). The second group pedaled 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest for 4 minutes (completing a total of 7 to 8 sets) with maximum effort. The key was the maximum effort, and each interval had to be performed as a sprint.
