What is Location Intelligence?
LI or
Location Analytics, is the ability to generate, analyze and visualize geographic data to identify relationships that are not obvious at first sight. And how can it be used? In an infinite number of ways: Location Intelligence applications, together with synergetic technologies such as the Internet of Things and Big Data, allow for an endless number of applications in both the public and private spheres. A recent study by Forrester Research concluded that one of the technologies with the greatest future projection is that of geospatial analysis tools and platforms. It is not surprising then, that some of the fastest growing companies in the world in recent years are Location Intelligence companies, such as the Spanish CARTO or the American Mapbox, to name a few.
Location Intelligence in the real world
Hand in hand with CARTO and Mapbox, cities like Mexico City and New York have generated Location Intelligence platforms to manage and track the entire metabolism of the city. This allows them to make real time decisions on aspects as varied as vehicle traffic, garbage management, and the logistics and security of large public events.
In the private sphere, it is not only a matter of discovering non-obvious relationships, but also of using this knowledge to make business decisions. New fields such as Geomarketing, or Indoor Mapping are revolutionizing the way companies relate to their customers and in turn the way customers approach, interact and consume various products. Today, with Location Intelligence it is possible to decide which is the best place in a city to place a new franchise or to know which is the route users take inside a shopping center: what they see first, where they spend more time and what they ignore.
And how do I, an "ordinary" citizen, use this type of technology?
Not everything is indecipherable algorithms and programming. While it is necessary to have some knowledge of spatial analysis to implement these technologies, it is clear that simplicity and clarity are fundamental when visualizing all types of information. This is clear for giants like Uber and small ones like Instamaps, who have developed, each one on their own, powerful but simple visualization tools where we can load our own geographic data and explore it with free tools and state of the art technology.
In the case of Instamaps, we can create maps on the web, make simple analyses and share them easily. While Uber, has developed a web tool called kepler.gl, which allows to make some analysis on a high quality viewer.
If anything, Location Intelligence is here to stay. What John Snow did we can do today to make our cities more sustainable and safe or to grow our business. What use do you think you can give to Location Intelligence in your professional life?
