Shapes of pearls: they are not only round.

Each of the types of pearl jewellery buy online you have read about can have various shapes, which, believe it or not, are not only round.

When imagining pearls, most people picture a perfectly smooth, round surface, but did you know that round pearls are actually the hardest to find? Since pearls are organic gemstones, they occur naturally in a wide variety of shapes:

Round: they are the most iconic, but also the rarest. Of all the pearls collected in an exploitation, less than 5% are perfectly round.
Oval, or drop-shaped pearls, are symmetrically spread and have the appearance of a teardrop. They are one of the most popular choices for earrings thanks to the fact that they flatter all face shapes.
Baroque pearls have the most irregular shape and no two pearls can be found exactly alike. They are all asymmetrical, with shapes that can vary from almost round to curved or bulging.
Button pearls, as the name implies, are similar to buttons in the sense that they appear flattened. This shape is most common in freshwater pearls.
Circle - is a subset of baroque pearls, with the only difference being that they have circles around the diameter of the pearl. This is a unique and distinguishable shape, usually found in freshwater pearls, Tahitian black pearls and South Sea pearls.
