Paul nació en Eisenhüttenstadt, en la antigua Alemania Oriental. Cuando llegó a Berlín era la época de las primeras fiestas techno. Paul fue cautivado por por los sonidos frescos y la atmósfera de la recién creada escena de clubs berlinesa, y comenzó a pinchar en 1991. El promotor de las fiestas Dubmission le conoció y le dio su primer trabajo como Dj en Turbine, un club que comenzaba a despegar en aquella época. Su debut como Dj fue tan brillante que rápidamente corrió la voz en los clubs berlineses. La música que pinchaba Paul Van Dyk era muy particular. Su estilo a la hora de mezclar y la atmósfera que creaba en sus sets le proporcionó actuaciones en los mejores clubs de Berlín.​

Su primer single fue Visions of Shiva en 1992 en el sello MFS. Este fue un proyecto realizado en colaboración con Cosmic Baby. Paul se ha ganado el respeto de todo el mundo como remezclador gracais a sus trabajos con Humate, New Order, Dance 2 Trance, Sven Väth, Age of Love, Amen y Sunday Club... Como Dj, Van Dyk consiguió rápidamente muchos fans en Europa y su fama le ha llevado a casí todos los clubs más importantes del mundo. Su laboratorio de prácticas era el club E-Werk de Berlín donde celebraba una fiesta mensual con invitados como Sasha, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Darren Emerson, Nick Warren, Francesco Farfa...

En 1996, cuando Paul van Dyk hizo la gira alemana para promocionar su album Seven Ways, las reacciones en todo el mundo fueron impresionantes, especialmente en Inglaterra donde se colocó como número 1 en el Dj magazine, que normalmente acaparan artistas ingleses o americanos. Los singles Beautiful Place,Forbidden Fruit y Words, con las remezclas de productores como Salt Tank, BT, Quattara o Curve siguieron con el éxito en las listas de Alemania e Inglaterra.

Vorsprung Dyk Technik fue el triple CD publicado en 1998 que recogía 33 remixes de Paul Van Dyk, y es la mayor colección de su trabajo como remezclador y muestra porque ha pasado a ser uno de los productores más solicitados en todo el mundo. La prueba final llegó en 1999 cuando el DJ Magazin le coronó como el mejor productor internacional. La residencia de Paul en el Gatecrasher de Sheffield ese mismo año fue considerado como la segunda mejor fiesta de por el Muzik Magazine. Además Paul Van Dyk fue votado mejor Dj internacional en los premios Muzik de 1999, y mejor Dj internacional por el The Ministry of Sound Magazin.

Gracias a él, la música trance ha vuelto a estar de moda en Inglaterra, a pesar de que él nunca ha cambiado de estilo, ya que ha seguido haciendo trance todos estos años hasta que por fin en 1999, ha conseguido el éxito total.
